There are hundreds of sculptors, probably even thousands if you count those who came before us. Sculpting has been around since the 4th and 5th centuries BC. Throughout history, humanity worked hard to elevate this craft to a whole new level as we know it today.
There are thousands of sculptures out there, probably even reaching a million. However, there are only a few sculptures considered to be legendary masterpieces of all time. Here are a few of history’s greatest sculptures.
The Great Sphinx
No one knows who built the Great Sphinx in the Giza Plateau in Egypt as well as when it was built. Despite all of that, it has been around for hundreds of years and it is considered to be one of the greatest sculptures of all time. This sculpture is not only a sculpture but also one of the most famous monuments in the world.
The Sphinx is a mythical creature with the body of a lion and head of a human. This sculpture is 66 feet high and its size from tail to paw is 240 feet. The Great Sphinx is said to be the first-ever sculpture in Egypt.
However, scholars and historians can’t see eye to eye about the origins of this amazing sculpture. Throughout the globe, you’ll see several replicas of this great art.
David by Michelangelo
The great David who defeated Goliath, one of the greatest stories in the bible. This sculpture fully represents David as a hero to be recognized by humanity throughout history. The sculptor of this art is none other than the legendary Michelangelo, one of the most iconic and influential artisans in history ever.
In 1501 Florence’s city government commissioned Michelangelo to create the David statue to be placed at the city’s cathedral home. However, once they saw the finished art, they were astounded by its beauty and decided to position it at the entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio.
The David is now sheltered at the Gallery of the Academy since 1873 and a replica of it was placed in its original location in 1910.
Statue of Liberty by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi
Probably the greatest gift in history ever as well. The Statue of Liberty in Manhattan, New York is a gift from France to the United States. It is a sign of friendship, respect, compassion, and more between the Americans and French people.
The statue is mirrored from the Roman goddess Libertas. The Statue of Liberty is many things; it is a sign of freedom for all. According to UNESCO, it is the “masterpiece of the human spirit.”
